At Meydit, we love to dress you in style while saving the planet. That's why we recommend using eco-friendly textiles for our slow fashion services. But not all fabrics are created equal, and we don't want to greenwash you. So, we suggest using the following materials, all backed by the Good on You sustainable fashion rating system:
Recycled cotton: made from pre-consumer or post-consumer waste cotton, recycled cotton reduces waste and saves water.
Organic linen: made from flax grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, organic linen is breathable and biodegradable.
Organic hemp: grown without harmful chemicals, hemp is a durable and low-maintenance crop that requires less water than cotton.
TENCEL® lyocell: made from wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed forests, TENCEL® lyocell is a soft and silky fabric that is gentle on the skin.
Recycled wool: made from pre-consumer or post-consumer waste wool, recycled wool reduces waste and saves energy.
ECONYL: a regenerated nylon made from fishing nets, carpet scraps, and other nylon waste,
Bananatex®: made from the fibers of banana plants, Bananatex® is a durable and biodegradable material.
Piñatex®: made from pineapple tops. Piñatex® is a versatile natural textile, suitable for use as a leather alternative.
Peace silk: Unlike conventional silk, peace silk (also known as Ahimsa silk) is produced without harming the silkworms that create the fibers. Instead, the cocoons are collected after the silkworms have emerged as moths, allowing them to complete their life cycle. This process results in slightly shorter and coarser fibers, but the fabric is still luxurious. .
Meydit also encourages the use of salvaged and vintage/thrifted fabrics, from upcycling Granma’s treasured Sari to repurposing curtains, sheets, and blankets. We believe that giving new life to existing materials is a sustainable and ethical practice that reduces waste and preserves the history and beauty of textiles. So not only are we using eco-friendly textiles like recycled cotton, organic linen, TENCEL® lyocell and peace silk we're also repurposing and upcycling materials to create unique and one-of-a-kind garments.
